This article, written by my Democratic opponent Don Leonard, purports to offer guidance to save liberalism, while rejecting its core principles. It is a proposal to destroy our economic system in order to save it. As leftists often do, it blames the failure of socialist policies and the resulting collapse into clientelism, authoritarianism, and poverty on specific details of implementation or political contingencies, rather than incentive structures that cannot work.

As noted here, Professor Leonard is clearly sympathetic to the Democratic Socialists of America and their radical leftist proposals. Unlike the author of the linked article, I do not think he is a fundamentally dishonest person; I think he is merely mistaken about the consequences his policies would have, having drawn the wrong lessons from the 1930s and 1980s.

The solution to affordability is not more government redistribution, but to get government out of the way of lowering housing, child care, and medical costs.
